New Artist #16

Dook

Hes an interesting dude, here's what he says about himself on his website:

I was born in Singapore in 1959 on purpose. It was the nearest hospital to the Cocos Islands, where my wonderfully British parents, John and Daphne Clunies-Ross, worked hard farming coconuts in paradise, the fifth generation to do so.
When I was young, I had always imagined my mum, with her 'motherload', rowing in time with her contractions, across the Indian Ocean to Singapore, to have a fish head curry and deliver me.
On Cocos, my father always spent the day barefoot, handsomely dressed in light grey cotton slacks, a white cotton shirt with the sleeves rolled up.
He wore shoes only for the Queen's visit, and for dinner every night with his jacket and tie whether they had company or not. He is, as he once wrote under 'occupation' a 'gentleman', and so I was sent off to school in England with the vague hope that I might become one too.
A lifetime of boys boarding schools deposited me into the world, well educated, well fed but clueless.
During the last year however, I had picked up my mother's talent and passion for photography, spending hours in the darkroom rather than studying.
After a year off, my father encouraged me to become a photographer's assistant rather than to receive a formal training, advocating that job experience was much more valuable than a certificate, and I believe he was right. After assisting various people in London for four years I became freelance, which means you have a lot of free time trying to lance a job.

New Artist #14

Patrick Zephyr
Nature Photographer

(he does more than just insect and spider photos, I just really love insects and spiders so they are my favorites of his work)

Patrick Pacheco Zephyr grew up in Fall River, MA, where he spent his childhood searching for amphibians, reptiles and insects and exploring other hidden natural treasures. In 1992, he moved to the western part of the state to pursue his bachelor’s degree in exercise science at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. Following graduation, he participated in a three month canoeing expedition in a remote region of the Northwest Territories of Canada. Patrick purchased his first camera (a 35mm Nikon 6006 SLR) to document this adventure, and has been taking photos ever since. During Patrick’s many outdoor explorations, his love for the natural world grew. In 1998, he decided to turn his passions for the natural world and photography into a full-time profession as a nature/landscape photographer. His camera has since followed him to such places as the Bugaboos in British Columbia, the rainforests and mountainous regions of the west coast, the everglades and countless National Parks. However, his favorite photographic subjects are what he discovers each morning as he explores his own backyard. Most of the images in Patrick's galleries were captured within 30 miles of his home in Massachusetts.

Patrick is now an established and award winning professional nature photographer. His photographs are displayed throughout New England, and have been published in newspapers, magazines, corporate publications, text books and calendars as well as his ever expanding line of fine art nature cards sold in stores throughout New England. Since beginning his photography career, Patrick has sold thousands of limited edition prints to customers throughout the world. Patrick takes great pride in being responsible for aspects of the printing, matting and framing of his work. His prints can be purchased at Fine Art Shows, through this website, and at his gallery in Pelham, MA. In addition, Patrick has been offering landscape photography workshop for over 15 years with an emphasis on manual exposure image capture and learning to "see what the camera sees".
Patrick’s goal as a nature photographer is to show others that the beauty and magic of the natural world is waiting to be explored in our own backyards. His belief is that we need not travel far but instead slow down and be present where we are to "see" and to experience the magic of the natural world. His hope is that in viewing his photographs, people will be inspired to be present, explore and learn about the wild places around them and appreciate the beauty in the natural world that surrounds them in their everyday lives.

New Artist #11

ok, this one is not technically a "new" artist to me, in fact I know him personally. He's a cool dude and very talented and everyone else should know about him.

Justin Henry Miller
JHM is a painter with a very distinct style, one subset of his work is paintings on vintage photographs:  Practical effects photo manipulation.

ARTIST STATEMENT:
The images in my work are derived from a synthesis of influences including: science fiction, anatomical illustration, cartoons, controversial trends in science, general themes in nature, and personal experiences.

Growing up on a horse farm I witnessed first-hand, man’s conscious manipulation of nature.  Selective breeding and the factory-like production of an annual crop of new animals was the norm.  Seeing my father perform artificial inseminations, ultrasounds, and inoculations on this livestock proved to have a lasting impact.

I have become increasingly interested in the closing gap between, science fiction and science-fact.  Cloning, transgenic breeding, surrogate mothering, surgical augmentation and food modification are just a handful of supposed advances that have sparked my imagination.  I approach my work imaging the experiments that have gone awry and try to create a world where the byproducts resist expiration.  The juxtaposition of organic forms with sustaining mechanical devices suggests man’s imposition.  This relationship also creates an ambiguity between coexistence, infliction, and dependence.  Also important to note, is my consistent use of a synthetic, “candy-land” palette employed to seduce viewers into this uncanny world.  The results are images of biomorphic beings, fluctuating between success and failure in their own pastel world of desolation.
My new exhibition, "The Fallout Kingdom," creates this parallel world, providing a glimpse into the aftermath of our own planet’s seemingly inevitable demise.  Despite this vanitas, the characters in my paintings display a whimsical resiliency, as they salvage the leftovers and reclaim the detritus to carve out a new candy-coated existence.
